Best actor award for Rocco Nacino?

ROCCO Nacino as Pedro Calungsod

by Ronald Constantino

GOOD BREAKS – Rocco Nacino is getting very good breaks on the wide screen.

“Burgos” and “Pedro Calungsod: Batang Martir” right away come to mind.

In “Burgos,” Rocco plays missing activist (in all probability dead) Jonas Burgos, the son of courageous mother Edita Burgos, played by Lorna Tolentino. The role is emotionally and physically daunting, the torture scenes particularly tough.

EVEN TOUGHER – “Pedro Calungsod” is even tougher. He had to learn Spanish, Latin, and Cebuano, actually singing Latin hyms. He died in defense of his faith in Marianas Islands (Guam) in 1668. Some years back, calungsod was beatified and eventually canonized by the catholic Church.

San Pedro of Cebu is the second Filipino saint, after lorenzo Ruiz of Binondo, Manila.

But more than the physical demands of the role, Rocco was more challenged by the emotional and spiritual aspects of San Pedro calungsod. To come out believable. Rocco had to feel, internalize, live the part.

Which Rocco achieved … to the satisfaction of writer-director Francis Villacorta.

BEST ACTOR – “San Pedro Calungsod: Batang Martir” is an entry to the 2013 Metro Manila Film Festival. Is a best actor award in the offing?

Rocco doesn’t entertain the thought. It’s enough that he gave his best.

By the way, if memory serves me right, this is the first time the filmbio of a saint is joining the Metro Manila Film Festival.

STUDIO NEWS – That is ABSCBN, the Kapamilya studio .

Susan Roces declined the offer to play mother to Xian Lim in a Star Cinema movie, with Kim Chiu as leading lady. Pilita Corrales replaces Susan.

Kiko Estrada is out of Julia Barretto’s soap “Mira Bella.” Enrique Gil takes over.

Gretchen Barretto is Richard Gomez’s love interest in another Star Cinema movie. The role was first offered to Dawn Zulueta, but she’d rather do a soap with Richard. Also in the movie are John Lloyd Cruz and Jessy Mendiola.

Who’s the next “Darna’? Angel Locsin, who’s played the superwoman when she was with GMA.

And the next “Dyesebel’? In all probability Julia Montes.
