Guy & Pip, Vi & Bot: Long ago and faraway

Nora Aunor and Tirso Cruz

OUT OF THE SHADOW – It took some time for Tirso Cruz III to get out of the shadow of Nora Aunor. In the ’70s, Pip was identified, associated with Guy – and no one else. Then the Guy & Pip loveteam was supreme – in popularity and at the box office.

One time, a producer wated to cast Pip in an important project opposite Vilma Santos. There were vehement objections, “Masyadong nakakabit ang pangalan ni Tirso kay Nora.” Pip was replaced by another actor.

In the same boat, more or less, was Edgar Mortiz, in the early ’70s Vilma’s favorite leading man. Remember Vi & bot?

In time, Bot managed to be onhis own – not as an actor, but as television and movie director.

Pip, of course, turned out to be a very fine actor – onscreen and onstage – with a number of awards to his name.

Guy & Pip, Vi & Bot came to mind as they turned 60 this year.

SEPARATE WAYS – While their onscreen loveteams turned into offscreen romance, they eventually went their separate ways in real life.

Pip and Bot are happily married – Tirso to Lyn Ynchausti and Edgar to Millet Santos.

Guy and Vi had more “complicated” personal lives.

After Edu Manzano, Vilma found her “ikalawang gloria” in Ralph Recto, former Batangas congressman and incumbent senator. Vi herself joined politics, first as Lipa mayor (three terms) and now Batangas governor (on her third and last term).

Nora’s marriage to Christopher de Leon was annulled. Other loves came into her life, but to date Guy hasn’t remarried. She lived in the US for eight years, but is apparently back for good.

Vilma Santos and Edgar Mortiz

NOSTALGIA – Whenever this columnist bumps into Nora, Vilma, and Tirso, we can’t help but look back in the ’70s with fondness. Too bad that Edgar no longer, or rarely, attends showbiz functions. We’ve lost touch.

The three stars are unfailingly warm and friendly, inevitably remembering the good days – long ago and faraway.

All of us must be really getting old.
