Veteran singer Susan Fuentes, known to most as the “Queen of Visayan Songs,” succumbed to an unspecified kidney disorder, Saturday, following a protracted battle with the illness. She was 58.

ABS CBN News reported that the singer, who was confined at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute in Quezon City, was pronounced dead at 12:30 p.m.

Born Susan Toyogan in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte, Fuentes was a product of provincial amateur singing contests. She eventually rose to fame in the ’70s with a string of hit albums.

Some of the tunes she popularized include “Matud Nila,” “Usahay,” “Gimingaw Ako” and “Miss Kita Kung Christmas.”

Fuentes underwent a kidney transplant in 2002.

She was last seen in public via a series of concerts in 2010 alongside friends Pilita Corrales and Dulce.
